Graffiti is a natural and often pleasant part of living in Bushwick. However, sometimes certain statements or urgings can get into people’s heads a little too much. The most recent pervasive tag in the neighborhood is one that we’re assuming We the Femmes is responsible for. The tag suggests simply, “Castrate yrself.”
While other tags like “Call your mom” or “My parents give me money” are harmless enough, this particular one has been causing a lot of Bushwick men to take to their dingy bathrooms with a knife or a pair of shears. Not only has this devalued many apartments in the neighborhood, but it’s also left a lot of women with no choice but to turn to other women for sexual release.
The Burning Bush interviewed Alexander Wang (not to be confused with the designer of the same name), a Bushwickian who fell into the trap of self-castration. When asked why he did it, Wang stated, “There was something about the graffiti. The script… it was just so beautiful. I couldn’t ignore what it told me to do.” Local police are working around the clock to whitewash the graffiti as it arises, but whoever’s putting it up must have an army of people working on the project (again, We the Femmes’ modus operandi). In the meantime, if you have a boyfriend or semi-consistent person you fuck, shield his eyes from the sight of this graffiti.
