It isn’t just homicides that go down at La Fogata. It’s also arguments over bad Mexican food, chiefly, whether or not the restaurant serves it. In an incident that occurred earlier this afternoon, just a little over a week after a scuffle that took a man’s life, a regular at the eatery got into a heated argument with what can best be described as, well, a gentrifier.
Juanita Lupe, a 43-year-old mother of two who has been at La Fogata every day since it opened, overheard newcomer to the Gates stop Shawn Novice complain, “This taco tastes so dry,” to his friend and roommate Shelly Bystander. These words incited Juanita to rise to her feet and shout, “Wha you say?!”
Novice cowered in her presence at first, but upon taking another bite of his taco, he concluded, “Yes, these tacos are dry.” Juanita bristled and said, “Say it one more time.” He raised the taco to her face and insisted, “Try it for yourself.” Appalled, she took the taco and rubbed it in his face. “Don’t fucking come here again,” she warned. It’s likely Novice never will.
