In the endless alcohol war between Bushwick and Ridgewood, another point goes to Ridgewood for Bonus Room located at the corner of Wyckoff and George Street right off the Halsey L. Incidentally, it’s also just down the block from music venue Trans Sados, proving there is, indeed a movement afoot in old Ridgewoodio.
One of the co-owners of Bonus Room, Marlene Cabin, a 38-year-old from the Pacific Northwest, admitted there is “a certain Twin Peaks quality to the bar.” She added, “After all, that’s what the kids around here want–a faux rugged experience centered around pop culture.” This is, in fact, exactly what Bushwick is missing from its bar scene, more focused on developing a culture modeled after the exclusivity of the Meatpacking District. Sure, there are coffee shops like Juno that have a millennial-geared name and aesthetic, but thus far, no bars in Bushwick have come close to emulating Bonus Room–not even Hellacious Times.
Incidentally, the Bonus Room brainchildren are also responsible for Jefferson stop bars Heavy Woods and Bodega, two completely antithetical entities that merely serve to peddle the false concepts of the post-2010 Bushwick lifestyle. “We want to compensate for what we’ve done to Bushwick with those bars. Ridgewood is how we can make amends,” noted Cabin. Unfortunately, the Bushwick alcoholics will be left in the dust as a result.
