With the truth out about most Bushwickians just pretending to read and the recent shuttering of Mellow Pages in large part due to illiteracy, a sad bid to reinvigorate a genuine lust for reading in the neighborhood has been made by adding a Give A Book, Get A Book box near the Morgan L stop.
With its prominent placement and graffiti arted exterior, the attempt at making reading look alluring is obvious. Moreover, as the head of the Committee to Get Bushwick to Read For Real, Erline Bookphile, pointed out, “Bushwickians need to be assured that they’re going to get something in return for giving something. It’s kind of like how one expects head in return for head.” Nonetheless, the result of the box’s presence has merely been an overflow of discarded books.
“I saw it there and thought, ‘Wow, this would be a great place to get rid of all those books I have on my shelf so I can clear more space for my decorative shit. You know, Naragansett figurines and that sort of thing,” noted Bushwick resident Paul Venice, who fancies himself a writer but has thus far only started a Tumblr. With sentiments like these, it’s no wonder residents are simply tossing their books out without bothering to take any in exchange.
