On the heels of Brooklyn getting a minor league football team, Bushwick has also stepped out of the woodwork of sports to come up with a minor league team of their own–and it’s not what you’d expect, which makes it totally expected.

Several residents have cobbled together a mixed martial arts team they’re dubbing the Bushwick Brawlers. The idea for the team came from 29-year-old Tim Pugilist, whose lifelong dream has been to own a dojo. Realizing how much more prominent and powerful Bushwick has become, Pugilist felt the neighborhood deserved some sort of representation in the sports realm. And so, unlike we thought, it has nothing to do with the fact that people just wanted a sport with the word “mixed” in it. As in “mixed media” or “mixed drink.”

Pugilist stated, “Bushwick is Brooklyn as far as I’m concerned. And why would anyone want to watch football when they could just watch people kick the shit out of each other? The leader of Women Hating Women, Slutta Sax, chimed in by adding, “I want to punch every woman I see in the face.” Though many are on board with the team’s symbolism of Bushwick (a.k.a. a disorganized, sweaty mess), some have formed a committee to put a stop on any merchandise that claims the Bushwick Brawlers are the “official” team of Bushwick. The Burning Bush has a feeling this league could be usurped by the more popular notion of a competitive drinking team.
