Bushwick-Obsessed Candlemaker Creates Candle that Smells Like Shit in Honor of Neighborhood

Who doesn’t love a delightful scented candle? The Burning Bush will tell you who: Local candlemaker Psy Ko. The Korean born 24-year-old moved to Bushwick four years ago when his love of crafting scented waxes first began. Like so many other Bushwickians, Ko’s first apartment was a loft in the basement of the McKibbin.

It was during this time that he became fascinated with the distinctively pungent scent of Bushwick in general and the McKibbin in particular. Ko told The Burning Bush, “I couldn’t get enough of that sweet aroma of trash, semen, occasional hints of sewage and subtle notes of damp laundry. I had to figure out a way to bottle the fragrance.”

And figure it out he did. After two years of trial and error, Ko has finally bottled what he feels is the perfect representation of all things Bushwick/McKibbin. Mass marketing the scented candle under the name “Stench,” Ko’s product has already sold out in boutique stores like Mary Meyer, Better Than Jam and, somewhat randomly, Kings County. Ko assured, however, “There’s plenty more where that came from.” Can’t wait. Maybe next time he can re-create the smell of Tutu’s as well.
