Many fashion trends have come and gone in this neighborhood, but the latest one to take hold of men and women alike has been shag rugs as tops. Long ago fallen out of favor in the decor realm, this style of rug has found a new form or popularity on the sartorial scene.
The innovator of the trend, Sharon Jaynkay, a 23-year-old studying fashion journalism at FIT, told The Burning Bush, “I don’t know, I was just lying on my shag rug one day (my roommate’s shag rug, really–he also has a lava lamp. I think he’s like 50) and thought, ‘Why not turn this into a hot crop top?’ So that’s what I did. Afterward, everyone just kind of copied me, like Regina George with the nipple hole top in Mean Girls.”
A cashier at Beacon’s Closet confirmed, “It’s true. Any of our items that look even remotely shaggy have been flying off the racks.Personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in shag. Yet another reason I’m moving to the New Lots Avenue stop.” The Burning Bush recommends making your own shag rug top out of stolen carpet from your therapist’s office.
