While many New Yorkers are trying to get the fuck out of here in favor of California’s “promised land” cliches, there are just as many Californians migrating here to get a taste of something in complete opposition to their normal lifestyle. The increasing amount has reached a crescendo not only in weed aroma factor, but also in what migrant Bushwickians have taken to calling the area: Kushwick.
“I’ve designed an entire clothing brand around it,” noted local fashionista and sewing machine owner Michael Whores, a 37-year-old former Californian who attended a few continuing education courses at the New School circa 2005. “Essentially I get all my inspiration from kush, so I thought, you know, why not expand that inspirations from smoking it everyday to creating something out of it?”
Although Whores’ primary focus has thus far been on hats, he is currently branching out into leggings, tanks and bodycon dresses that will be modeled by Miley Cyrus at this year’s upcoming Bushwick Open Studios. His influence has been so pervasive that even those forced to work in Midtown have been bold enough to sport the Kushwick name on their bodies. “This is Kushwick baby. Kushwick, NYC(alifornia). Errbody know that, and they’re proud to show it through my label.” Buy your merch for as low as $450 at bushwickiskushwick.biz.
