There’s a lot of hippie dippy types living in Bushwick, especially those that hang out at the Loom. While some of this ilk would never dream of using their mumbo jumbo beliefs for evil, others, like recently exposed scam artist Deepak Chakra, have no problem capitalizing on vulnerability.
Chakra’s method of operation consisted primarily of using fliers (a decidedly Bushwick tactic) to advertise his ability to unblock the chakras of “artists” willing to pay the right price. The hoax was called out by a local aspiring actor slated to appear in the Bushwick Starr’s production of a Maria Hernandez musical. Brando Newman, a 22-year-old with the suburban scent still fresh on him after moving here a month ago, had the displeasure of having his “chakras” “removed” by Chakra.
Newman told The Burning Bush, “He locked me up in a dark room for about an hour, poked at me like a chicken out of the oven and played some instrumental versions of Andrea Bocelli. It was positively harrowing.” After his experience, Newman proceeded to go around town crossing out the phrase on the fliers that read “Remove the blocks to your creativity & yourself” to “Remove the blocks to your wallet.” Needless to say, we won’t be hearing any more instrumental Andrea Bocelli music again.
