Commonly Overheard in Bushwick is an occasional series we write whenever we hear something someone actually said on the streets of Bushwick. This is not to be confused with the Tumblr of a similar name.
With the L train being a constant source of reenacting what it was like to be thrown on a boxcar and sent to a work camp/indicator of income tax bracket (high), the sect of Bushwickians who ride the M train seems to possess a much more California vibe. It’s all chill moods and Williamsburg Bridge vistas with these people–peppered in, of course, with the occasional ghettoto talking on his or her cell phone in a vernacular that’s largely unintelligible.
The pull of the M train is twofold: 1) you’re aboveground, ergo you can continue to use your phone, which most people take advantage of ad nauseum until the tunnel comes and 2) the panoramic view of the city as you traverse the bridge.
Evidently, this is what prompted one Bushwickian to say to another, “I think the M train is so beautiful.” In spite of how hokey this sounds, the man who said it was being entirely serious. One imagines he brings his sketchpad along on every subway journey so as to capture a sunset or a crack addict coughing. And now, perhaps thanks to his “plastic bag in American Beauty” take on it, you will too.
