Commonly Overheard in Bushwick is an occasional series we write whenever we hear something someone actually said on the streets or in the businesses of Bushwick. This is not to be confused with the Tumblr of a similar name.
Self-esteem isn’t exactly synonymous with Bushwick. When you’re not unemployed and pretending to pursue dreams that won’t come to fruition, you’re probably slinging coffee or doing unpaid performance art. Or you’re going home to Jersey/Connecticut/Maine/etc. to avoid paying for food or doing your own laundry.
But one thing you can’t avoid is poor decision-making in the sexual realm. And, eventually, after enough wrong “insertions,” it’s only natural to start feeling a bit of anxiety when the encounters arise–as they so often unexpectedly do.
That’s why one Bushwickian felt inclined to tell her friend over cohfee tawk at AP Cafe, “If I start to have sex with someone, I get anxiety attacks.” It’s a common feeling, especially among women riddled with random bouts of PTSD stemming from unwilled sexual flashbacks. But hey, at least the anxiety meds are more easily attainable than birth control.
