Commonly Overheard in Bushwick is an occasional series we write whenever we hear something someone actually said on the streets or in the businesses of Bushwick. This is not to be confused with the Tumblr of a similar name.
No matter how played, trite and, frankly, overrated Radiohead becomes, the band will always serve as an emblem of the “cute waif girl.” Any female who has relished a Radiohead album post-Pablo Honey fits the bill. And, no matter how rudimentary their knowledge of the band is, even the slightest mention of any single is liable to make a guy go from soft to hard.
And that’s just what happened to one local Bushwickian, Rodney Hangerfield, a 32-year-old who has loved Radiohead ever since catching one of their shows in promotion of In Rainbows at Madison Square Garden. Incidentally, he only got the ticket because the girl his brother wanted to take got in a car accident the same day.
Upon hearing Corey Darling, a 23-year-old who took his order at Bake Shop (no longer mistaken for Cake Shop), mention to her co-worker that she just bought another Thom Yorke poster from Etsy, Rodney practically splooged. Later that night, he met his fellow Radiohead fan brother at Jupiter Disco for a drink and gushed about his latest obsession, offering the number one reason why Corey is so attractive to him: “She has all these posters of Thom Yorke on her wall.”
