As The Mermaid Parade–one of Coney Island’s most iconic institutions–struggles to stay afloat in the poverty-stricken climate (by comparison to a place like the Morgan stop) that is the Bensonhurst vicinity, Bushwick once again beckons to poach something that doesn’t originally belong to it.
Though there was a time when Bushwick strove to be more like Coney Island in a way that made residents want to move there, now they figure they can just sit back and wait for the best of it to come to them–which it must if it wants to be able to attract the kind of audience willing to throw some money at their love of kitsch.
“To be honest, we’ve been looking for something that could fill the void during the summer ever since Bushwick Open Studios moved to the winter to be more sophisticated or whatever. The Mermaid Parade would be a great substitute,” commented the Committee to Pluck The Best of Everything From Every Neighborhood and Put It In Bushwick. So get your sequins ready, the summer might actually get weird again in Bushwick.
