For those who missed the elaborate Kanye-level publicity stunt that took place on Valentine’s Day to promote one of the latest in apps espousing “niche” dating, it was a giant “street art”-like image of Putin cradling Trump like his little wife.

However, the social media frenzy that it set off was no match for what happened later that night, when even newer to the scene Contemptr, an app with the same exact premise, decided to one-up Hater’s image with Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, an obvious nod to Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series, Feud.

Contemptr did Hater one better

Based on how many more times the app was hashtagged on social media, it became immediately apparent to the Director of Marketing at Hater, Don Soulcell, a 32-year-old with a degree from Princeton, that the content of his strategy failed, as he admitted, “Seems like people will always respond more favorably to pop culture than politics.”
