It was a staple of Greenpoint for so long, a beacon of light through its dimness to the sexually appetitive alcoholic. Matchless. That hub for the two for one Tuesday and the random back room antics. Though it was there long before Lena Dunham blew through town (after apparently blowing her sister), it somehow became an emblem associated with that now defunct show she had.
That being said, the owner of the bar, Mary LeMur, a 35-year-old originally from Boston, admitted of the closure, “We were just tired of being that bar people ‘made a pilgrimage’ to for the sake of a few scenes they saw in Girls. It was definitely attracting the wrong element, and, well, I just couldn’t take it anymore, so fuck it. We’re not beholden to this area.”
And now that it has flown the Greenpoint coop in favor of an even more literal shit-laden neighborhood–Bushwick–LeMur is hoping that perhaps the bar can experience a rebirth while maintaining some of its pre-Girls integrity and beer-shot price points that will continue to satisfy the lush’s often very thin wallet. No word yet on where, exactly, the bar might open, but chances are Mad Tropical won’t last much longer. Maybe it can go there.
