A vacant plot of land located on a desolate stretch of DeKalb Avenue—1492 Dekalb, to be exact—will soon welcome Bushwick’s newest luxury building, Fortress 1492: The Columbus Condos. Mock-ups for the building look striking: 32 limestoned stories surrounded by a functional moat and nonfunctional cannons (it’s more castle than condo.) “These design flourishes allow our conquistadors to observe and study indigenous Bushwickians from a safe distance,” says Rob Winegold, lead developer of 1Percenter Realty.
One drawback may be location, the site sitting ten minutes from the nearest subway shop or coffee shop. From the condo’s website: “The creature comforts of gentrification are yet far away—which presents the perfect blank canvas for you to build a neighborhood from the ground up, your way!” When asked for comment, Winegold stated, “We want our frontiersmen and women to experience True Bushwick, and build New Bushwick.” When asked about the Bushwick that already exists there, he looked befuddled.
Studios start at $3,300 but amenities are endless. There’s a state-of-the-art gym, replete with one treadmill, one StairMaster and a mat upon which to perform yoga or Tae Bo. And wall-to-wall mirrors! Sweetening the pot, refrigerators will come fully stocked upon move-in—bespoke, limited edition “Ocean Blue” flavored Martha’s Mayonnaise, frozen Roberta’s pizza and bologna by Boar’s Head. If this sounds like your type of place, act quickly. The apartments are already 65% leased, but won’t be ready for move in until the second Monday of October.
