As one of Bushwick’s many tiki bar options, the OG of the concept in the neighborhood, Commodore II, is well-aware that it has to keep its material fresh if it wants to compete with other gimmicky places like The Dromedary.
That being said, it is choosing to take a chance on causing great offense by renaming the drink that put its parent bar, The Commodore, on the map. That’s right, the classic Hurricane beverage will, for this weekend only, be called Hurricane Irma, and feature blue Curacao as a substitute ingredient to make the cocktail look blue for that ultimate hurricane-y effect.
Randall DeMarco, the lead bartender on the case–or rather, the person with the idea to implement the brief nickname–admitted to The Burning Bush, “We know it’s pushing the limits of insensitivity, but we thought we’d take a risk the same way Roberta’s is with that ‘Keep Calm and Gentrify Brooklyn’ shirt.” And it’s true, it could be a risk that pays off, as most Bushwick residents are highly susceptible to this type of scandal marketing. Will you be at the bar of Commodore II this Hurricane Irma weekend?
