Bushwickians are known for their tendency to make light of things, like that time Frank Asiago had a Hasidic-themed party at the McKibbin. It’s part of their allure–at least for some. Others, however, are not so easily charmed. In this case, the not so charmed party is the Jewish people of Bushwick, both Orthodox and Reform, who are scandalized by the fact that a fellow Jew named Rivkah Moskowitz is putting on a Chanukah Dance Party with her Christian friend, Jane Smith.
Moskowitz and Smith had planned to remain silent about the protests that have been going on outside of the former Wreck Room (which is the venue they’ve rented out for the party), but today, after passions reached a crescendo when one of the protesters, David Schwimmer, heaved a giant Star of David through the window of the building, Moskowitz and Smith felt the need to speak out. This act of violence prompted Moskowitz and Smith to express a message of peace via The Burning Bush. “This party is about fun, celebration and, most importantly, unity. Just because someone isn’t Jewish doesn’t mean they can’t graft the best parts of the culture.”
Smith added, “Yeah, and like, we’re gonna have super fun music, like remixes of Barbra Streisand and shit, and we’re also going to have as many latkes as you can stuff your face with.” Such selling points are going to make it difficult for even the staunchest of the Chanukah Dance Party protesters to resist the festivities tonight.
