Even though the title of Urban Outfitters spokesperson Lana Del Rey’s latest single is “Brooklyn Baby,” any Bushwickian can hear that she’s speaking only to their specific neighborhood. That’s why the Council for the Auditory Betterment of Bushwick has announced that “Brooklyn Baby” will be the official anthem of these peculiar boundary lines.
Some of the less gentrified parts of Bushwick were more reluctant to adopt this self-indulgent song as the supposed encapsulation of their neighborhood. In fact, there have been several protests off the Central and Knickerbocker M stops where there’s still a vestige of some of the original population from the pre-2005 era. Some of the signs held up included alternative suggestions for an anthem. The whitest suggestion was Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” Though that’s hardly about Brooklyn.
