Cafe Grumpy, which has now expanded to various juggernaut outposts in Manhattan, makes no bones about owing its entire success to one, Lena
Dunghole Dunham. The memoir writer/nudist frequently showcases it on that bastardization of North Brooklyn existence known as Girls and has confessed indirectly to The Burning Bush that it was her intention all along to cause the expansion of the Greenpoint location.
While doing a shoot for a scene of Girls near the BQE, Dunham and Zosia Mamet inadvertently oversaw Christina Ricci’s movers haul in her shit and it led Dunham to the conclusion, “Jesus Zo, I’m so glad I expanded Grumpy into Midtown. North BK is just becoming too oversaturated with celebrity for me.” And this, on the heels of a small pop-up Grumpy opening in front of Swallow.
Dunham, who owns properties in Williamsburg and Los Angeles has now purchased an apartment near Grand Central so that she can delight in both the Grumpy locations on Lexington Avenue and 39th Street at 7th Avenue. She added to Mamet, “Thank god I’m getting out of this borough. It’s beyond done.” Dunham, who was a key instigator in making the neighborhood “done,” also has plans to end her show with Dunham moving to Roosevelt Island. “You know, just ’cause it’s so different,” she explained to Ricci, who was kind enough to invite them in for some hard lemonade.
