In these dire times, a man must do all he can to procure his daily bread. In Mario Velazquez’s case, that meant taking a chance on using a banana dyed black to attempt holding up a bodega so that he could turn up at a party without being empty-handed of alcohol.
Though he walked in with the confidence of Kate Moss walking down the runway in the 90s, his demands for “a six pack of Modelo and all the Takis you have” made the bodega owner, Mohamed Mahetma, a 34-year-old from Yemen, suspect of the seriousness of his heist.
“I call the police discreetly from my phone behind the counter. I didn’t know they were going to kill him,” explained Mahetma with a near tear in his eye. “I feel responsible almost.” But then, how could Mahetma have known that the police would even manage to find cause to shoot a man holding a banana?
