Any Bushwick acolyte is all too familiar with Tumblr star and local celebrity Molly Soda (also noted for sporting the bonnet trend). Her brand of self-hating self-love is just the sort of thing that makes the performance art of this neighborhood so distinctive.
This is exactly why major soda corporation Coca-Cola has decided to tap Soda for a stint as their spokesperson–after all, her last name goes so well with the name of the beverage. “When they asked me to do it, I couldn’t help but think, ‘Yeah, I love soda,’ but also, ‘Am I selling out to the man?’ I guess even if I am it would be in keeping what Bushwick has done. And I don’t want to stray from the trend of the area,” Soda commented.
Coke’s Bushwick Division representative, Clara Grafter, a 32-year-old with a marketing degree from Full Sail University, stated, “When we thought to ourselves, who is the Taylor Swift (she’s been our most famous spokesperson so far) of Bushwick? Molly Soda immediately came to mind. She’s perfect. If she can’t sell our soda to Bushwickians, no one can.” Stay tuned for the ad campaign in early 2016.
