More frequently in Bushwick, you’ll overhear someone start a sentence with, “My colorist said….” This horrifying new trend in Bushwickian vernacular is a sign of the increasing presence of legitimate (as opposed to not so legitimate places like Who’s Next? Barber Shop) beauty salons in the neighborhood. As a direct result, these businesses are being put into heavy rotation on the main homepage of Lifebooker.
Among the array of salons to crop up in Bushwick and on LIfebooker are Self, Rat Tail, Color Me Bushwick, and FemmeMullet. The Burning Bush made the effort to try talking to each of these coiffeurs to find out why exactly they’ve decided to sell out to Lifebooker. The only semi-coherent, non-evasive answer we got was from Harry Vagine, a 45-year-old former pageant stylist who opened up Rat Tail in 2005 because, once upon a time, it was cheap to open a business in Bushwick. “We offer all kind of haircut, including the Whorish Waif, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl and Miley Cyrus. I put my salon on LIfebooker because I want to increase my prices. People from Midtown want to see what Bushwick all about, so they willin’ to pay whatever I ask on Lifebooker.”
This logic was somewhat unclear to The Burning Bush, but it was the best pull quote we got. Considering the popularity of Bushwick branded beauty products like Cunt Face and the ever-waning popularity of “the full bushWick” pubic style, it’s likely that the market for beauty and salon businesses are only going to increase, which means Lifebooker and Bushwick are two terms that are becoming as synonymous as beer and shot.
