The last thing the world needed was a mash-up of Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift. But that’s what it got in the form of Halsey, a 20-year-old singer whose real name is Ashley Frangipane (she’s from Jersey, after all, so such a last name is to be expected). Although residents living off the Halsey Street L tried to chalk up her stage name as coincidence, it’s been made very clear by the singer that she grafted it from Bushwick.
In an interview for DSCVR (since, you know, no one likes to spell out full words anymore), Halsey confirmed, “Halsey is an anagram of my first name Ashley. And it’s also a street in Brooklyn where I spent a lot of time growing up.” This revelation has shocked and appalled many, who didn’t want to believe she was pulling a Jay-Z.
“It’s one thing for someone ‘hood’ like Jay-Z to name himself after the JMZ line, but it’s not the same when someone vanilla like Halsey decides to take an entire street on as her stage persona. Jay-Z didn’t decide to call himself Marcy, for fuck’s sake,” stated Helen Nopuedo, a 25-year-old who has decided to move off the Bushwick-Aberdeen stop to avoid people making fun of her for living on Halsey. “Of course, some other fucking pop tart is probably going to call herself Aberdeen once I move in there,” Nopuedo concluded. Sadly, she’s probably right.
