The Selena Gomez (with cross sign) tag has long been a staple of locations throughout Brooklyn and Queens. However, the Bushwick-specific graffiti has been bearing the brunt of some ire lately with a certain addition underneath it.
That addition, of course, is none other than “¡Gringa Accent!” Clearly an overt dig not only at Gomez’s skin bleaching ways and suppression of her descent, it is also a mirror of most long-time Bushwickian residents’ (read: not white) sentiment toward those who continue to pervade the neighborhood with “concept buildings” like Bushwick Part Deux.
A member of the sub-sect of taggers subverting the “Selena Gomez ✞” graffito opted to anonymously explain his or herself. “We feel that the very use of this name as graffiti indicates the nature of the ever-changing population in this town. That is to say, one that thinks of Selena Gomez first before Selena (Quintanilla). Which I shouldn’t even have to put in parentheses.” Thus, if you’re a member of this group of “Selena Gomez ✞” taggers, we recommend you prepare yourself for the perpetual defacement of your “work.”
