In the fashion trend war that seems to be on the rise right now in Bushwick, there is a sudden competition–yet simultaneous synergy in terms of “beigeness”–with the Mennonite chic craze. That competition is the straight jacket.
Thanks to the sudden influx of mental institutions into the neighborhood, straight jackets are becoming a natural part of the fashion language of Bushwick. “When I see someone wearing a straight, I think, ‘They’re just like me: can’t be confined,'” stated Marion Caron, a 24-year-old who couldn’t get into a loony bin, so instead decided simply to make her room look like one.
With the acceptance of lunacy through fashion, it’s likely that straight jackets will not only be sold at more local clothing and vintage stores throughout Bushwick, but that there might even be a specialty straight jacket purveyor called Bustin’ Out opening up on Knickerbocker if all goes according to a pending commercial real estate deal.
