Blood is undeniably the most sure-fire way to gain attention. We watched in awe as PETA went around performing their over the top demonstrations, hurling buckets of blood (or red paint as a substitute, for reasons quite obvious) on the gorgeous and expensive couture furs of unsuspecting rich women. The human race has also bore witness to countless wars, generating an immeasurable amount of actual bloodshed, all in efforts to propagate some sort of political or religious agenda. Bushwick has now followed suit, thanks to local artist Petunia Rosenthal. Petunia has sparked a bit of controversy in the Bushwick scene due to her most recent art show that took place at the Fuchs Gallery.

The show, which is called “NO,” featured Rosenthal sitting around a table with her feminist group, We the Femmes, sipping vaginal excrement from teacups such as the one pictured above. They then stood upon the table and proceeded to eat the tampons from their cups right before simultaneously smashing the teacups onto the ground.

Yeah, we know...

Yeah, we know.

Those watching appeared to be struggling to contain their lunch, while others recoiled in repugnance. However, when the Burning Bush attempted to find out how people felt about the rather… unique exhibition, we were met with what seemed to be reluctance to provide honest opinions. We spoke with Matt McGrady who said, “I think this piece of performance art really…. forces you to recognize the plight of the female gender and the suppression from the Patriarch… I think it’s great and there should be m-more of it.” While McGrady claims that he enjoyed the art show, we found that he may have felt otherwise through his inability to suppress the nauseated look on his face.

Right as we finished speaking with McGrady, he rushed over to the nearest wastebasket and began violently hurling the contents of his stomach into it. We believe that some of the men in the community may be refraining from expressing their genuine feelings about the display in trepidation of being labeled a “misogynist prick” by their female counterparts, thus risking an increased inability to get laid anywhere in the neighborhood.

Not everyone had qualms about criticizing We the Femmes’ “NO” project. Especially not Bushwick local, Alexander Watts, who had this to say, “We the Femmes are rabid feminist extremists who will stop at nothing to promote elitism of the Matriarch. I think that “NO” is the most vile, distasteful, and unsanitary thing that I’ve ever seen. That shit is not art and everyone needs to stop pretending like it is!” When Rosenthal was asked what she thought of Watts’ comment, she only said, “Alexander Watts is a misogynist prick and is hated by mostly everyone in Bushwick. Why he has yet to be exiled remains an enigma.” We the Femmes is now accepting donations of used feminine products for their upcoming art show at the Fuchs gallery next month.
