With the lust for politics throughout the U.S.–and New York City in particular–running at an all-time high, it’s no wonder there’s been so many “charity” benefit shows of late at the likes of Silent Barn, Alphaville, Gold Sounds and Brooklyn Bazaar. But The Burning Bush had to ask itself, is all this money really going to benefit such organizations as Planned Parenthood and the ACLU?
The answer, of course, is: not entirely. When probed further (and not just anally), an anonymous source working at Silent Barn (clearly the weakest link in the DIY venue arena, bribe-wise) confirmed, “There’s just maybe about 75% being scraped off the top. People gotta cover their rent, you know.”
While this information has been leaked fairly widely, it doesn’t seem to be preventing concert-goers from attending, with one regular, Joey Meh, a 26-year-old from Long Island, insisting, “I’d still rather give my money to a DIY space than anywhere else. They always need a little bit of charity–what with that Lady Gaga to compete with. She plays dive bars now, did you hear?” The question is, can you support the type of place that sometimes bolsters people to believe in their dreams even when they shouldn’t? Or would you rather actually be giving your money to an agency that can give abortions to potential talentless babies?
